## Summary

Most gamification fails because points, badges, and leaderboards rent behavior rather than build it — and often destroy the intrinsic motivation users already had. Three case studies illustrate the pattern: Foursquare trained users to want crowns instead of restaurant recommendations, LinkedIn's auto-awarded badges inflated volume over expertise, and Disneyland's hotel leaderboards became an 'electronic whip.' Two mechanisms explain the failures: Goodhart's Law (optimizing the metric instead of the goal) and the Overjustification Effect (external rewards displace intrinsic motivation). A practical 'reward cutoff test' — silently removing gamification for 5% of users for 30 days — reveals whether mechanics are decoration, a crutch, or the entire product. Alternatives grounded in Self-Determination Theory (autonomy, competence, relatedness) include making feedback itself the reward, shrinking competitive arenas, offering real choice, and scaling difficulty to skill.
