# Meet the New HTTP QUERY Method (RFC 10008): Finally, a Better Way to Handle Complex Read Requests

**[Fahim Ahammed Firoz](https://daily.dev/sources/xfovvqapjod6awssejint)** · [@fahimahammed](https://daily.dev/fahimahammed) · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

RFC 10008 introduces the HTTP QUERY method, designed to fill the gap between GET and POST for complex read-only operations. GET is semantically correct for reads but cannot carry a request body, while POST supports payloads but implies state mutation. QUERY combines the best of both: it is safe, idempotent, and supports a request body, making it ideal for search APIs, analytics queries, complex filtering, and large JSON payloads. The method is now an official Internet Standard, though ecosystem support across browsers, proxies, CDNs, and frameworks is still maturing. QUERY is not a GET replacement but a specialized tool for cases where URL-based query parameters become impractical.

## Content

For years, backend developers have faced an awkward decision when building search and read-heavy APIs.

Should you use **GET**, which is semantically correct but doesn't support a request body?

Or should you use **POST**, which supports large payloads but wasn't designed for read-only operations?

The new **HTTP **`QUERY`** Method**, standardized in **RFC 10008**, aims to solve this problem.

---

## The Problem with GET

`GET` is the standard HTTP method for retrieving resources.

It has several advantages:

- Safe (doesn't change server state)
- Idempotent
- Cache-friendly
- Well understood by browsers, proxies, and CDNs

However, it has one major limitation:

> **A GET request should not carry a request body.**

That becomes a problem when your API needs complex filtering or searching.

Imagine sending something like:

```
{
  "filters": {
    "category": ["books", "electronics"],
    "price": {
      "min": 100,
      "max": 1000
    },
    "brands": [
      "Apple",
      "Samsung",
      "Sony"
    ]
  },
  "sort": "price",
  "order": "desc",
  "page": 3
}
```

With GET, developers usually end up encoding everything into the URL.

```
GET /products?category=books,electronics&brand=Apple,Samsung,Sony&...
```

As queries become more sophisticated, URLs become longer, harder to read, and more difficult to maintain.

---

## Why POST Isn't the Perfect Answer

Many APIs—including GraphQL APIs and search services—use `POST` for read operations because it supports a request body.

Technically, it works.

Semantically, it's not ideal.

`POST` is generally intended for operations that may create or modify server state.

Unlike GET, it is **not safe** and **not idempotent by default**, which means HTTP infrastructure typically cannot treat it like a normal read request.

As a result:

- Caching becomes less straightforward.
- Automatic retries are more conservative.
- The HTTP semantics don't accurately describe the operation.

---

## Enter HTTP QUERY

RFC 10008 introduces a new HTTP method:

```
QUERY
```

Its purpose is simple:

> Perform a read-only operation while allowing a request body.

It combines the best aspects of GET and POST.

### QUERY is:

- ✅ Safe
- ✅ Idempotent
- ✅ Supports Request Body
- ✅ Designed for complex queries
- ✅ Better aligned with HTTP semantics

---

## GET vs POST vs QUERY

| Feature             | GET     | POST              | QUERY               |

| ------------------- | ------- | ----------------- | ------------------- |

| Request Body        | ❌       | ✅                 | ✅                   |

| Safe                | ✅       | ❌                 | ✅                   |

| Idempotent          | ✅       | ❌ (default)       | ✅                   |

| Suitable for Search | Limited | Common workaround | Designed for it |

| Cache-friendly      | ✅       | Limited           | ✅ (where supported) |

---

## Example

Instead of encoding everything into a long URL:

```
GET /users?department=engineering&country=US&experience=5...
```

You can send:

```
QUERY /users
Content-Type: application/json
{
  "department": "engineering",
  "country": "US",
  "experience": {
    "min": 5
  },
  "skills": [
    "Node.js",
    "TypeScript",
    "PostgreSQL"
  ]
}
```

The operation is still a read-only query, but now the payload lives in the request body instead of the URL.

---

## Where QUERY Makes Sense

Some common use cases include:

- Search APIs
- Analytics queries
- Reporting endpoints
- Complex filtering
- Product catalogs
- GraphQL-style read operations
- Data warehouse queries
- Large JSON-based search payloads

---

## Will It Replace GET?

No.

GET remains the best choice for the vast majority of resource retrieval operations.

If your request can be represented cleanly using query parameters, GET is still the right solution.

QUERY is intended for situations where:

- the request body is large,
- filters are deeply nested,
- or URL-based requests become impractical.

Think of it as a specialized tool—not a replacement.

---

## Can You Use It Today?

The specification is now an official Internet Standard (RFC 10008).

However, ecosystem support is still evolving.

Many browsers, frameworks, reverse proxies, API gateways, CDNs, and HTTP libraries are gradually adding support.

For now, many production APIs will continue using POST for complex read operations until QUERY becomes widely supported.

---

## Why This Matters

The introduction of QUERY isn't about adding "just another HTTP method."

It's about improving HTTP semantics.

For years, developers have used POST for operations that never modified data simply because GET couldn't carry a request body.

QUERY provides an official, standardized way to express:

> "I'm only reading data—but I need a request body."

That makes APIs more expressive, more consistent, and better aligned with the HTTP specification.

---

## Final Thoughts

HTTP has remained remarkably stable for decades, so the introduction of a new request method is significant.

Whether QUERY becomes a common part of everyday API design will depend on adoption across the ecosystem.

But for backend engineers, API designers, and system architects, it's definitely worth understanding today.

As support grows, QUERY may become the standard approach for complex, read-only operations that don't fit neatly into GET.
