# Memory Hygiene Beats Memory Volume: Why AI Agents Should Forget Things

**[Medium](https://daily.dev/sources/medium_js)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Storing everything in an AI agent's memory leads to noisy, contradictory retrieval rather than better answers. The solution is a write gate that filters what gets persisted based on four criteria: durability across sessions, source verification, future utility, and auditable metadata. Beyond write gates, staleness must be handled through recency-based decay in retrieval scoring, conflict detection at write time, and explicit supersession (marking old memories inactive rather than deleting them). Long-lived agents also need deliberate forgetting semantics for privacy, consent revocation, and quality — memory hygiene is a production requirement, not an optional optimization.
