Throttling is a messaging pattern for handling high-frequency event streams. When a consumer cannot keep up with the rate of incoming ephemeral events, an intermediary consumer is placed in front of it that drops all events except one per defined time unit. A classic example is mouse position events emitted at 500Hz being throttled to 5Hz for UI rendering, reducing the rendering workload by 100x.
