# Meta acquires Conductor, the coding agent platform; Conductor Cloud shuts down

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 3 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Meta is acquiring Conductor, the platform for running local and cloud coding agents. The company launched in July 2025, and CEO Charlie Holtz says the team will build its next interface at Meta Superintelligence Labs. The Conductor app keeps working, but Conductor Cloud will shut down over the next few weeks. Users can migrate workspaces to local setups via support@conductor.build. Conductor promises a new interface early next year. @beyang points migrating users to Amp, which is offering free credits to anyone switching.

## Content

Meta has acquired Conductor, the Mac app for running teams of AI coding agents in parallel. The deal was announced on November 4, 2026. Terms weren't disclosed. The team is joining Meta Superintelligence Labs, where CEO Charlie Holtz says they will build the next interface, reportedly alongside Nat Friedman and Alexandr Wang.

## What happens to the product

Conductor launched in July 2025 and works with agents like Claude Code, Codex and Cursor. Its agents run on other labs' models, not Meta's, so the purchase looks aimed at the interface and the team rather than a model.

The wind-down runs in stages:

- New sign-ups stopped immediately.
- Conductor Cloud goes read-only on November 13 and shuts down on November 20. Cloud user data is erased, so export your history first.
- The local Mac app keeps working. It gets new models and critical fixes into early 2027, then winds down.
- Cloud workspaces can be transferred to local setups. Support is at support@conductor.build.

The team says a new product is coming early next year: "We have some big, crazy plans for the next interface. If you liked Conductor, you're gonna love what's coming."

## Where users are going

A batch of alternatives appeared within hours:

- Orca is free and open source, runs Claude Code and Codex in worktrees, and has a guide for opening existing Conductor workspaces.
- Paradev offers a shared UI for running agents from anywhere, plus team cloud environments. Its Team plan costs $60 per user per month.
- boxes.dev is another option for cloud-hosted, multiplayer agents.
- Paseo and T3 Code suit self-hosted setups you can reach from your phone.
- Amp is offering free credits to people migrating, and one user shared a single-prompt migration for people leaving Conductor.

If you're moving, worktrees and chat history need to be copied before the deadlines above.

## A second deal the same day

OpenAI agreed to buy Pierre Computer Company the same day, to push its Codex developer tools. Two labs bought developer tooling in one afternoon.

I think that's the interesting part. Labs aren't only competing on models anymore. They want the screen where one engineer supervises ten agents, and that screen becomes a daily habit, which tends to stick harder than a benchmark lead. For startups building on coding agents, the uncomfortable question is whether a lab would rather buy your product than build it.

It's also a warning for anyone depending on an independent AI coding tool. The team can get acquired and the product can still disappear.

## Questions this post answers

### What happens to Conductor Cloud now that Meta acquired Conductor?

Conductor Cloud is shutting down over the next few weeks, while the main Conductor app keeps working as normal. Conductor CEO Charlie Holtz says the team is joining Meta Superintelligence Labs to build a new interface. Affected users can move their Conductor Cloud workspaces to local setups and get help from support@conductor.build.

### What are the alternatives to Conductor Cloud after it shuts down?

Amp is positioning itself as a migration target for departing Conductor Cloud users, offering free credits to anyone switching over. This came after Meta's acquisition of Conductor triggered the Cloud shutdown, prompting other coding agent platforms to court displaced users.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 192 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-11-05).

**TL;DR:** Reaction is dominated by a scramble for Conductor Cloud alternatives (dozens of competing tools pitched by their own founders), mixed with congratulations to the team alongside notable frustration that Meta acquired the product and is shutting down the cloud offering on an aggressive timeline.

**Sentiment:** 20% positive · 35% mixed · 45% skeptical

**The case for**

- Several migrants report alternatives like Orca, Paseo, T3, and Boxes already match or exceed Conductor's feature set, especially for mobile/multi-machine use.
- Many commenters genuinely congratulated the founders on a well-built, polished product and a quick exit.
- Some see this as a sensible, fast way for Meta to jumpstart a competing desktop coding-agent product.

**The pushback**

- Many are frustrated the shutdown timeline for Conductor Cloud feels very aggressive, forcing a rushed migration.
- Strong distaste for Meta as the acquirer, with some pledging to boycott or reverse-engineer the tool instead.
- Several question why the company didn't open source the desktop app before winding down, leaving users stranded.
- Skepticism that any of these competing harnesses have real moats, with concern about repeated cycles of new tools appearing and dying.

**By community**

- hackernews (mixed): A flood of alternative-tool pitches (many from competitors' founders) sits alongside genuine congratulations to the team and real anger about Meta as the buyer and the rushed cloud shutdown.

**Hottest debate:** Whether acquisitions like this are really about acquiring useful technology/product value or just talent and market timing, given how easily competitors claim to replicate the feature set.

**Open questions**

- What will the new interface planned for early next year actually look like under Meta?
- Will any of the many alternative tools consolidate into a clear winner or will the space remain fragmented?
- Will local Conductor's open-source status or lack thereof affect long-term trust in similar acqui-hire-prone tools?

> I really fail to understand what is going on here. There is literally no moat in most software expect the users a product has acquired. The number of slightly different solution to an existing product is wild. And this is getting crazier. I build for the fun of it now. Completely lost any sight of $ goals. I am building agents, have own gui framework, own server orchestration, and now looking at deploying multi-app servers using unikernels. I build for my niche audience and make them happy - I am going via my existing clients who are in the property management domain. Non technical folks who have to handle everything from inspection to finance. My ideal type of folks. I am sure by the time I build my end to end agent/orchestration/deployment/management system, I will have some customers and many more clones. Slightly different clones. This is the future. Why would anyone acquire anything? They need my prompts, not my tech.

> (As someone who isn't particularly happy about this news) > why sellout your company and your customers and community? Why not? Do you think this is a heart project, that the founders have a personal passion for agent orchestration somehow? They're not curing cancer or supporting orphans, most companies are created to make money, that's how our economic system works (for better or worse, but I'm not going to blame individuals or be surprised about it). "community"... Come on. There's customers, there's no community here.

> (disclosure: I'm a founder of yet another T3/Conductor competitor, https://boxes.dev) You might want to do a quick eval of all the products in the space vs your org's needs! There are a lot of options now, and T3 isn't really a drop-in replacement for Conductor if you wanted the cloud setup. Specifically T3's great for local, but for cloud they don't host anything - you just run their server on your own machine / VM. Which works ok, esp if you prefer full self-hosted, but then parallel agents still share a machine and need worktrees for isolation. Conductor Cloud actually eliminated worktrees by giving each workspace its own VM with a dev environment preloaded - which is the same approach we (and a few others) are taking.
