The DM feature is opt-in, but a more controversial aspect is Meta AI appearing in public Threads feeds in five test countries (Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore) where users can mute but not block it. Meta's strategy is to keep users within its ecosystem rather than losing them to ChatGPT or Google Gemini. A parental alert feature has also been added for teens discussing self-harm with the AI in DMs. ## Content Meta is rolling out its AI chatbot to Threads direct messages for all users globally. The feature lets you chat privately with Meta AI one-on-one, sharing posts, images, links, and videos directly in the conversation, with support for follow-up questions. This isn't entirely new territory for Meta — the chatbot has been available in DMs on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp for a while. Threads is just catching up. Previously, Threads users in select markets could only interact with Meta AI through public posts, which is a pretty different experience from a private chat. The DM feature is opt-in, which is the reasonable part of this rollout. The less comfortable part: Meta AI is also posting in public Threads feeds in five test countries — Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore — and users there can't block it, only mute it. That's a meaningful distinction. Opting into a private AI assistant is one thing; having an AI account show up in your public feed without a real opt-out is another. Meta's broader goal here is fairly transparent: keep users inside its ecosystem rather than sending them to ChatGPT or Google Gemini when they want AI help. Whether that's a good enough reason to push AI into public feeds without full user control is a fair question.
