# Meta is building a cloud business to sell spare AI compute — here's what's real and what's hype

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 4 min read · 1 upvotes · 1 comments

## Summary

Mark Zuckerberg confirmed Meta is exploring an AI cloud business (reportedly called Meta Compute) that would rent spare capacity from its $100bn+ AI infrastructure to external customers, competing directly with AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Meta's stock surged ~15% on the news, but the business has no customers, no contracts, and no history serving external cloud clients. Meta does have real assets — custom MTIA chips and massive scale — but cloud is a service business requiring SLAs, enterprise sales, and support organizations Meta has never built. The broader context is a compute supply glut, with hyperscalers, neoclouds, sovereign clouds, and even a former shoe company now offering GPU-as-a-Service. The analysis argues enterprises that build an abstraction layer above all providers will benefit most, and that the stock move and the actual business still need to reconcile.

## What's happening

Meta is in early talks to lease computing power to Anthropic in a deal potentially worth up to $10 billion over two years, according to the New York Times and confirmed by CNBC. Anthropic reportedly proposed the arrangement in June, with payments structured in monthly increments.

If it closes, the deal would sit alongside Anthropic's existing $1.25 billion-per-month arrangement with SpaceX's Colossus data center. It would also be the clearest signal yet that Meta's cloud ambitions — internally dubbed Meta Compute — are moving from idea to reality.

Mark Zuckerberg has been direct about the direction: selling compute "makes sense," he said publicly, and the company has been building toward it, including hiring former AWS executive Dave Brown to lead the effort.

## Why Meta wants to do this

Meta has committed up to $145 billion in AI infrastructure capex for 2026. That's a lot of capacity to build, and a lot of pressure to justify the spend beyond internal use. Renting out excess GPU capacity to external customers is the obvious way to do that — turning a cost center into a revenue line.

The pitch to Wall Street landed. Meta's stock surged roughly 15% in its best week since early 2024 after Meta Compute was announced. Wolfe Research estimates that each gigawatt monetized at roughly $25 billion could lift EPS by around 20%. Options volume ran over 3x the 30-day average.

That's a lot of enthusiasm for a business that hasn't sold anything yet.

## The competitive weirdness

The Anthropic deal creates an odd dynamic: Meta, which develops its own Llama models, would be providing infrastructure to a direct AI competitor building Claude. But this kind of arrangement is increasingly normal. SpaceX already sells compute to both Anthropic and Google. Google sells Gemini access to Meta despite rationing it. GPU shortages have made everyone pragmatic about where capacity comes from.

What's less normal is Meta positioning itself against AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud — three companies with decades of experience running cloud businesses as a service. Cloud isn't just owning hardware. It requires contracts, support tiers, reliability guarantees, and the organizational muscle to actually serve external customers. Meta has never done any of that.

Neocloud providers like CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN felt the announcement immediately — their stocks fell sharply, even though Meta is one of their largest customers. CoreWeave alone has a $35 billion commitment from Meta. The irony is real.

## The broader pattern

Meta isn't alone in this pivot. Compute supply is fragmenting fast — hyperscalers, neoclouds, sovereign clouds, and opportunistic entrants (including, apparently, a former sneaker company that pivoted to GPU-as-a-Service) are all competing for the same customers.

More suppliers should mean better pricing. In practice, most enterprises can't capture those savings because every new provider brings its own console, billing system, identity model, and governance gaps. The result is sprawl, not savings.

The enterprises that will actually benefit are the ones building an abstraction layer above all of it — a single control plane where any provider is just a provisioning target, with unified cost visibility and real exit paths. When the specific supplier stops mattering, the buyer wins.

## What to watch

The Anthropic talks are early and may not result in a deal. Meta Compute has no customers yet and no track record. The stock rally was driven by narrative, not revenue.

That said, the direction is clear. Meta has the scale, the custom silicon (its MTIA chips are moving toward production to reduce Nvidia dependence), and now the stated intent. Whether it can build the service layer to match is the open question — and probably the only one that matters.
