Microsoft Discovery is an agentic scientific research platform built on VS Code, designed to accelerate scientific discovery using AI agents, knowledge graphs, and HPC integration. Demonstrated at Microsoft Build 2026, it parallels software development workflows — planning, coding, testing, deploying — but applied to science. A live demo showed the platform generating a research paper, discovering new proteins capable of decomposing PET plastic, and submitting lab protocols directly to an automated lab. The system dynamically creates agents when none exist for a task, runs long-horizon simulations in parallel, and integrates with physical lab equipment for a closed-loop discovery cycle.
