The jump is partly explained by an accounting change: Microsoft stopped buying short-term renewable-energy certificates that had previously masked true emissions, causing Scope 2 emissions to leap from 1.6% to 13.3% of the total. The rest reflects real growth from rapid AI and cloud data centre expansion, including a 51% rise in diesel and crude-oil use. Microsoft claims its efficiency work prevented emissions from reaching 34 million tonnes, and it matched 100% of electricity use with renewables. However, its carbon-negative-by-2030 pledge looks increasingly out of reach.
