Microsoft fixes KB5089549 Windows security update install issues

Microsoft has resolved a known issue that caused Windows 11 security update KB5089549 (May 2026) to fail with 0x800f0922 errors. The root cause was insufficient free space on the EFI System Partition (ESP), particularly on devices with 10 MB or less available. Affected devices would roll back the update at approximately 35–36% completion during the reboot phase. The fix is included in the KB5089573 preview cumulative update released May 26, 2026, and will be broadly available with June Patch Tuesday updates. Users not ready to install the optional update can use the Known Issue Rollback feature, and enterprise admins can deploy a specific Group Policy as a workaround.
