**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 2 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Microsoft laid off approximately 9,000 employees (less than 4% of workforce) despite strong financial performance with 18% net income growth. The gaming division was heavily impacted, affecting studios like King, ZeniMax, and Turn 10, with project cancellations including Rare's Everwild and Perfect Dark reboot. Critics question the rationale behind layoffs amid AI investment priorities, as the company has eliminated over 16,000 roles throughout 2025 following the Activision Blizzard acquisition.

# Microsoft Layoffs: Impact on Workforce and Gaming Division

Microsoft has announced a significant workforce reduction, laying off approximately 9,000 employees, which constitutes less than 4% of its global workforce. This latest round of cuts has sparked criticism from both current and former employees, particularly as the company continues to see strong financial performance, with net income growth of 18% year-over-year, totaling $25.8 billion.

The layoffs have heavily impacted Microsoft’s gaming division, including studios like King, ZeniMax, and Turn 10 Studios, the latter being the developer behind Forza Motorsport, which faced losing over 70 employees. Other impacted projects include the cancellation of Rare's Everwild and ZeniMax’s MMORPG codenamed Blackbird. The Initiative studio has been shut down entirely, and their Perfect Dark reboot has been cancelled. These cuts follow multiple previous rounds of layoffs throughout 2024 and 2025, despite Microsoft reporting overall revenue growth and increases in Xbox services.

Many critics within and outside the company question the rationale behind these layoffs, particularly focusing on Microsoft's AI investment strategy. There is growing concern that employees are being laid off not due to AI replacing them but to fund expensive AI initiatives. Phil Spencer, Microsoft's Gaming CEO, and Xbox leadership cite the need for strategic growth and management restructuring as necessary for long-term business health and success, although these statements have not quelled rising frustrations.

This marks another round of reductions following various workforce cuts earlier in the year, including 6,000 plus positions in May and additional layoffs in June. The fourth major layoff round since Microsoft’s $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard has deeply affected the gaming division and raised questions about the future trajectory of Microsoft’s gaming strategy amid recent developments.

Microsoft denies replacing human workers directly with AI, even though CEO Satya Nadella mentioned that 30% of Microsoft's code is now AI-generated. The layoffs coincide with Microsoft’s start to the new fiscal year in July 2025, cumulatively removing over 16,000 roles throughout 2025.

As the company navigates these transitions, many are left pondering the impact of repetitive layoffs on the workforce morale and Microsoft's overall direction, particularly in the gaming sector, where traditional console gaming efforts may be shifting towards software and services.
