# Microsoft is rolling out Linux container support to WSL

**[BleepingComputer](https://daily.dev/sources/bleepingcomputer)** · 3 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Microsoft has released WSL Containers as generally available, extending Windows Subsystem for Linux beyond running distributions to building, running, and deploying Linux containers directly on Windows. The feature ships via wsl --update and adds a new wslc.exe CLI (aliased as container.exe), plus a WSL Containers API for programmatic use from native Windows apps. General availability adds features missing in preview: restarting containers, file copy in/out, health checks, network connect/disconnect, real-time events, mount support, and configurable storage. Enterprise features include Microsoft Defender for Endpoint integration and Intune controls to disable containers or restrict image registries. VS Code Dev Containers, Aspire, and the VS Code Containers extension now support WSL Containers, and Docker Compose-style support (wsl compose up) is in development. Microsoft claims up to 2x faster file access performance from Linux environments.

## Questions this post answers

### How do I enable WSL Containers and what command do I use to manage them?

Run wsl --update to install WSL Containers, which is now generally available. This adds a new command-line tool called wslc.exe, which also has a built-in alias container.exe so you can use familiar container commands. A WSL Containers API is also available for Windows apps to programmatically launch and interact with Linux containers.

_daily.dev surfaces practical updates like this for developers adopting new WSL container workflows._

### Does WSL Containers support Docker Compose files?

Not yet as of general availability, but Microsoft says wsl compose up is already in development and aims to work with existing compose.yaml files unchanged. This was the most requested missing feature, and Microsoft has stated it has started building it and hopes to share more soon.

_Developers planning container migrations can track compose support progress through daily.dev._

### What enterprise security controls exist for WSL Containers?

WSL Containers integrates with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint so security teams can see process, file, and network activity inside containers tied back to the Windows host. Microsoft Intune can also disable WSL Containers entirely or restrict developers to pulling images only from approved container registries via allow lists.

_Security-conscious teams evaluating container policy options can follow coverage like this on daily.dev._
