Autopilot agents get a governed Entra identity, their own email, calendar, OneDrive storage and Teams access, and a spot in the org chart. They act as themselves instead of borrowing a user's credentials. That also makes them harder to move: the tighter an agent is wired into Microsoft 365 for identity and context, the more painful it gets to lift it onto another platform. ## Grounding in business data Microsoft IQ is the context layer. Fabric IQ brings governed Power BI business context into Copilot Chat and Cowork, and is now generally available, with Code integration coming through Frontier. IQ Sharing, in preview, lets organizations share governed business context across boundaries. Dynamics 365 and Power Platform data feed into the same grounding. Work IQ covers the personal side: email, meetings, calendar and documents. Developers can reach it three ways: a REST API, the A2A protocol, or MCP. Microsoft was clear that it doesn't replace Microsoft Graph. It sits on top of Graph as a dynamic tool layer for agents. A plugin registry that works across vendors, plus Work IQ developer tools (a wrapper around the Agents Toolkit CLI, packaged as a GitHub Copilot CLI plugin), round out the extension story. There were also Fabric and database announcements aimed at the same goal of putting enterprise data behind AI: - Fabric observability tools and Fabric Apps for building applications on governed data - Agentic data engineering features - SQL Server on Azure Local, now generally available, with a disconnected-operations preview - Database Hub in Fabric, in public preview, for managing SQL Server, Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, Cosmos DB and SQL databases - Specialist database agents for SQL and PostgreSQL, coming later ## Who pays for what Per-user licensing still covers everyday Chat and Microsoft 365 Copilot. Cowork, Code and Autopilot are billed by usage, through Copilot Credits, and so are the frontier models, including Astra and Fable. Agent 365 gets new FinOps for AI tools so admins can track and control model spend. The company is also reportedly authorizing enterprise discounts of 30% to 50%, presumably to win seats that later turn into usage revenue. ## Timing - Home and Code arrive through the Frontier early-access program in the coming weeks - Autopilot enters private preview at the end of September - Code reaches Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers later this year ## My read This looks like Microsoft catching up. OpenAI and Anthropic have both bundled chat, coding and agents into single apps, and Meta's Muse does similar browse-schedule-act work through connected services. Microsoft is also tidying its own house: the consumer-facing Mico mascot is gone, and the separate consumer Copilot is folded into the new app. The differentiator is the enterprise plumbing, meaning identity, governance and data context. Analysts see potential gains in productivity, less AI-app sprawl, and better cost visibility for CIOs, but a lot of this is still preview.
