The same April update also broke third-party backup apps, caused Windows Server restart loops, and prompted an out-of-band .NET patch for an elevation-of-privilege vulnerability (CVE-2026-40372). ## Content Microsoft's April 2026 cumulative update added security warnings for Remote Desktop (.rdp) files, but a bug is causing those warnings to render incorrectly on some systems — overlapping text, misplaced buttons, the works. ## What the warnings are for The April 14 update introduced RDP security prompts to protect against phishing attacks that abuse .rdp files. Threat actors, including APT29, have used malicious RDP files in phishing campaigns to steal credentials by connecting victims to attacker-controlled servers and accessing shared local resources. The update disables risky shared resources by default and warns users before connecting. ## The display bug The warnings don't render correctly when you're running multiple monitors with different display scaling settings. On affected systems, dialog text overlaps and buttons end up misplaced or hidden entirely — making the prompt difficult or impossible to interact with normally. The issue affects Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server after the April updates. If you're stuck with the bug before a fix lands, two workarounds help: match the scaling settings across all your monitors, or use Tab and Spacebar to navigate and interact with buttons you can't see. ## The fix Microsoft has addressed the rendering bug in the optional KB5083631 preview cumulative update for Windows 11. No fix timeline has been announced for Windows 10 or Windows Server. ## Other issues from the same April update The April update caused a few other problems worth knowing about. Third-party backup applications broke for some users, and Windows Server systems hit restart loops — both have been separately addressed.
