Microsoft announced Project Solara at Build 2026, a chip-to-cloud platform for 'agent-first devices' that run AI agents instead of traditional apps. Built on AOSP (MDEP), the platform features enterprise security via Intune and Entra ID, and a novel 'just-in-time UI' that lets agents dynamically adapt their interface to any device form factor. Two concept hardware designs were revealed: a wearable badge with 5G/satellite connectivity and biometric auth, and a desk companion that doubles as a Windows 365 thin client. Both devices have no app store or traditional desktop — agents mediate all software interaction. A private pilot is underway with Best Buy, CVS Health, Levi's, and Target. The platform supports Microsoft's own agents (Copilot, Researcher, Facilitator, Priority Agent) and third-party agents via Microsoft 365 Agents SDK and Copilot Studio. Fully generative UI is acknowledged as a future goal, not yet realized.
