This creates significant bottlenecks depending on how manufacturers allocate those lanes. For example, the Beelink ME mini spreads lanes so thinly that no slot runs at full x4 speed, while the GMKtec NucBox G9 gives each M.2 slot two lanes but leaves networking underserved. However, since a single 2.5 GbE port maxes out at ~312 MB/s and even a Gen 3 x1 slot delivers ~3x that, networking is actually the primary bottleneck for external transfers. Lane configuration matters most for internal workloads like drive-to-drive copying, VM storage, and snapshots, and it also limits upgrade paths — there's no room for a 10 GbE NIC if lanes are consumed by storage.
