## Questions this post answers

### What new features does Mistral AI OCR 4.1 add over previous versions?

OCR 4.1 adds native paragraph-level bounding box extraction, structural block labels, and block-level confidence scores. It powers the Mistral AI Document AI stack and is priced per 1000 pages, with a separate rate per 1000 annotated pages when using the extraction features.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 73 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-08-13).

**TL;DR:** Discussion splits between real-world OCR quality/accuracy debates (some praising Mistral OCR's results on handwriting and complex layouts, others finding it weak or hallucinating vs. Claude/GPT) and pricing complaints, with a long tangent about Europe's competitiveness in AI more broadly.

**Sentiment:** 25% positive · 30% mixed · 45% skeptical

**The case for**

- Some found Mistral OCR handled messy handwriting and complex typeset/scan quality better than ChatGPT on first pass.
- It's seen as a good cheap/fast compromise with reliable bounding boxes for tables and figures compared to fumbling generalist vision models.
- Can be run fully locally/air-gapped for privacy-sensitive use cases.

**The pushback**

- Pricing at ~3.5 per 1000 pages is widely called too expensive, especially compared to Tesseract, AWS Textract, or Azure Document Intelligence.
- Some report Mistral OCR hallucinating sentences and being outperformed by Claude on real documents.
- Others found Mistral's models generally underwhelming, including its coding model, suggesting it can't compete at the frontier.
- Performance is described as inconsistent and highly task-specific, with no clear best model across use cases.

**By community**

- hackernews (mixed): Sentiment is split between people happy with Mistral OCR's accuracy/price tradeoff and others who find it overpriced, inconsistent, or worse than competitors, alongside an unrelated but heated tangent on Europe's AI competitiveness.

**Hottest debate:** Whether the per-page pricing is justified given accuracy that some find excellent and others find mediocre or inconsistent compared to cheaper alternatives like Tesseract or self-hosted pipelines.

**Open questions**

- What is the best open/local OCR model currently available?
- How does version 4.1 actually compare in accuracy to version 4.0 or to Claude/GPT-based OCR?
- Can the output be used to produce accessible, WCAG-compliant PDFs?
- Is there a public site to browse example input/output pairs, especially for layout/bounding box extraction?
- Does the model perform better on French or other European-language documents?

**Highlights**

> While I haven't tried OpenAI for OCR, I've put my small scale OCR work through both Claude and Mistral OCR. Claude is absolutely better - even in OCR work I did last week and compared with Mistral OCR 4.0. Mistral's one advantage is that Anthropic now flags OCR, because they don't allow anything that could be considered "reproduction", even of work for which you own the copyright. So my new workflow is Mistral OCR for the actual OCR, followed by a proofreading pass by Claude (which is allowed). Claude is obviously more expensive, but it caught entirely hallucinated sentences created by Mistral OCR 4.0, so I was glad for the backup check.

> I got the opposite experience very recently : tried to OCR a bunch of handwritten emails addresses with chatGPT and I had to make so many corrections that I gave up. Whereas Mistral nailed it on first pass.

> 1000 Pages / 3.5€ this is expensive as hell. If this is not fastly superior than something like tesseract it is not worth it.

> Mistral is bumping the price of this thing every release. I think we're at 2x now?

> I have been quite happy with Mistral OCR for the documents I needed to process (typeset, but old, with questionable scan quality, sometimes elaborate typesetting or, much worse, typewriter-and-handwriting approximations of it). I do not test every new model when they are released, but I did a review shortly after Mistral OCR 3 was released and it was a very good compromise: cheap, fast, and good results without further processing. I found generalist models to be way too much faf to get them to avoid unnecessary modifications to the text and report accurate bounding boxes for figures and tables. That said, models have sometimes surprising weaknesses and a model could be terrible overall but magically work for one type of document.
