# Mosaic is an i3-style auto-tiling extension for GNOME Shell

**[omg\! ubuntu\!](https://daily.dev/sources/omgub)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Mosaic is a new GNOME Shell extension that brings i3-style automatic window tiling on demand. Unlike permanent tiling setups, it adds a Quick Settings toggle to switch between auto-tiling and floating modes. When active, windows arrange themselves using a tree-based layout. It includes keyboard shortcuts for window management, resizing, and swapping. Originally forked from System76's Pop Shell, Mosaic prioritizes simplicity and sane defaults over extensive configuration. It's available for GNOME 45+ via the GNOME Extensions website or by building from source.
