Most Linux gamers only hear about Bazzite, but a traditional distro might be the better fit

Bazzite has become the default Linux gaming recommendation, but it's not the only option. The core tradeoff is immutable vs. mutable distros. Bazzite's image-based, read-only system offers rock-solid stability and easy setup, making it ideal for appliance-style machines like HTPCs. However, mutable distros like CachyOS offer the same gaming capabilities (Proton, Gamescope, MangoHud) with full system control, instant package changes, and better compatibility with mainstream Linux documentation. For users who want to tinker, learn Linux internals, or have full control, a traditional mutable distro is often the better fit. The author uses both: CachyOS as a daily driver and Bazzite on a couch PC.
