# mucks: automating screen and tmux

**[zserge's blog](https://daily.dev/sources/zserge)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A lightweight session manager called mucks is introduced for automating GNU Screen and tmux workflows, written entirely in POSIX shell (~100 lines) with only sed as an external dependency. Sessions are defined in simple .mucksrc config files with a header (name, dir, mux) and a layout section describing windows, keystrokes to type, and split commands. The author built it after finding tmuxinator too heavy (requiring Ruby) and noticing most session managers ignore GNU Screen. Differences between tmux panes and screen windows are explained, along with current limitations and planned features like byobu/wemux/dvtm support.
