The earnings jump came mainly from lower finance costs, foreign exchange gains, and higher associate profits rather than core trading performance. Operating cash flow collapsed more than 80% as inventory and payables absorbed cash, reversing the prior year's balance-sheet clean-up. Obsolete inventory allowances rose, smaller units like training arm Mecer Inter-Ed and services declined, while associate Yangtze Optics Africa was the standout performer.
