# My entire home lab cost less than a new GPU, and it does more for me too

**[XDA Developers](https://daily.dev/sources/xda-developers)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A home lab built from an old gaming PC or a used workstation costing under $300 can outperform a new GPU purchase in practical value. Retired hardware like a Skylake i7 rig has more than enough power for common home lab workloads — Jellyfin media server, DNS sinkhole, NAS, VPN, and local AI inference. Even without existing hardware, used Dell/HP/Lenovo workstations from eBay undercut the price of a new RX 9060 XT or RTX 5060 Ti. Running services like Nextcloud, Immich, AdGuard, Ollama, and Tailscale can offset subscription costs over time while providing privacy and control that a GPU upgrade simply cannot.
