Windows 11's Modern Standby (S0 sleep) feature, inherited from the Windows 8 era, can cause Wi-Fi speeds to degrade after waking from sleep due to the network adapter failing to restore full bandwidth. The fix involves either switching to S3 sleep via BIOS settings, using a registry command in an elevated Command Prompt, or setting the laptop lid to trigger Hibernate instead of Sleep. S3 sleep must be supported by the firmware before attempting the registry change, otherwise the laptop may crash. Disabling Modern Standby results in stable Wi-Fi speeds on wake, no overnight battery drain, and no background processes running while the lid is closed — at the cost of slightly longer boot times when resuming from hibernate.
