Nearly 60% of TikTok videos shown to new users are AI slop, study finds

A Kapwing study of 10,742 TikTok videos found that 59% of content shown to brand-new accounts is AI-generated junk — roughly three times the rate on YouTube Shorts. Kids' content is the worst-hit category, with 97 out of 100 videos in the #CartoonKids hashtag being AI-generated. Educational, health, and history content are also heavily saturated. Experts warn of 'toddler AI misinformation at an industrial scale.' TikTok has introduced opt-in controls but critics say they are insufficient. The study highlights a structural incentive problem: AI enables volume-based content farming that overwhelms platform moderation.
