# New CrashStealer malware poses as Apple crash reporting tool

**[BleepingComputer](https://daily.dev/sources/bleepingcomputer)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A new macOS infostealer called CrashStealer impersonates Apple's CrashReporter system tool to steal credentials, keychain data, browser cookies, and over 80 cryptocurrency wallet extensions. Delivered via a signed and Apple-notarized installer ('Werkbit Setup'), it bypasses Gatekeeper without warnings. The malware prompts users for their macOS password via a fake system dialog, validates it locally using 'dscl', then harvests data from 14 password managers, Chromium/Firefox browsers, and user files. Stolen data is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before exfiltration to a C2 server. Researchers at Jamf note its distinctiveness lies in client-side encryption and native C++ implementation. Distribution appears targeted, gated behind a meeting PIN on a fake software site registered in late June 2025.
