New Electric Two-Wheelers Strain E Bike Regulations

The Western James Bay Telecom Network (WJBTN), an Indigenous-owned nonprofit, built Canada's first fully Indigenous-owned fiber-to-the-home network serving remote Cree communities along the James Bay coast in northern Ontario. Facing extreme logistical challenges — no roads, fly-in-only access, subarctic terrain, the death of a lead engineer, and COVID lockdowns — the team deployed a GPON-based fiber network using coherent optics backhaul technology, ultimately delivering 250 Mb/s connections to roughly 1,000 homes across 300 km of coastline. The network outperforms both Starlink and legacy wireless providers on latency (12 ms vs. ~60 ms for satellite), and community ownership of the infrastructure is seen as the key to long-term sovereignty and sustainability. The project has since become a model for Indigenous broadband deployments across Canada and the US.
