# New Linux 7.4 Feature For Reducing AI Noise Already Reverted Due To A "Crazy Beast"

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Linux's new TAINT_FORCED_BIND feature has already been reverted after merging for Linux 7.4. Greg Kroah-Hartman added the option in September to taint the kernel if the sysfs bind/unbind interface was used, since Syzbot and friends abused it to bind hardware to drivers not relevant to one another, generating noise from irrelevant bug reports. After merging, it was realized VFIO relies on bind/unbind in legitimate practice to pass PCIe devices through to VMs, and Kroah-Hartman described VFIO as a 'crazy beast' in its usage. The revert merged Friday night. Uwe Kleine-König has proposed using TAINT_DRIVER_OVERRIDE just for driver_override usage, which may be revisited for Linux 7.5.

## Questions this post answers

### Why was the TAINT_FORCED_BIND kernel feature reverted in Linux 7.4?

It was reverted because VFIO legitimately depends on the sysfs bind/unbind interface to detach PCIe devices from a host driver and attach them to vfio-pci for VM passthrough. The feature, merged by Greg Kroah-Hartman to taint the kernel when bind/unbind was used, was meant to flag bogus fuzzing reports from tools like Syzbot but also broke normal VFIO workflows. The revert merged the Friday after the feature landed.

### What alternative to TAINT_FORCED_BIND has been proposed for flagging driver bind/unbind abuse in Linux?

Uwe Kleine-König proposed using TAINT_DRIVER_OVERRIDE scoped specifically to driver_override usage, disabling driver_override by default while letting individual drivers opt in. This is intended as a narrower replacement for the reverted TAINT_FORCED_BIND option and may be considered for Linux 7.5 since it came too late for 7.4.
