# New open-source browser Blanc has a different kind of UI

**[omg\! ubuntu\!](https://daily.dev/sources/omgub)** · 4 min read · 52 upvotes · 25 comments

## Summary

Blanc is a new open-source browser built on Electron/Chromium that ditches the traditional always-visible tab strip and toolbar for a floating 'island' UI that expands to reveal tabs, address bar, search, and history. Developer Anthony J. Loria claims it uses a quarter of the RAM of Vivaldi or Chrome with six heavy tabs open. It includes built-in ad/tracker blocking (EasyList/EasyPrivacy), private browsing profiles, optional end-to-end encrypted sync, a Glance split-view feature, and even a built-in Mahjong game, but lacks web extension support and mobile versions. Workspaces are gated behind a $4/month patron subscription with an unremovable nag button, though the core browser is free and MIT-licensed on GitHub. A Linux AppImage is available, and the GitHub repo suggests it was partly built with AI coding tools.

## Questions this post answers

### What is the Blanc browser and how is its UI different from a normal browser?

Blanc is a new open-source browser, built on Electron and Chromium, that replaces the traditional always-visible tab strip and address bar with a floating 'island' pill at the top of the window. The island shows the site address and security info, and expands on click or with super+L to manage tabs, type addresses, search, or browse history; typing '/' runs commands.

_Developers weighing browser choices for daily use can follow interface experiments like this one on daily.dev._

### Does Blanc browser support web extensions like password managers?

No, Blanc does not offer web extension support, which means tools like password manager extensions cannot be used. It also has no mobile versions. Despite this, it still supports pinned tabs and tab groups (called tasks) surfaced through its island interface, plus built-in ad and tracker blocking using EasyList and EasyPrivacy.

_Anyone comparing browser feature trade-offs can track updates like extension support on daily.dev._

### How much RAM does the Blanc browser use compared to Chrome or Vivaldi?

Blanc's developer, Anthony J. Loria, claims it uses about a quarter of the RAM that Vivaldi or Chrome consume when running six heavy news sites in tabs simultaneously, despite being built on Electron, a framework often criticized for high memory usage.

_Developers evaluating Electron app performance claims can keep tabs on browser benchmarks via daily.dev._

> Blanc’s UI concept is pretty interesting. Replacing the traditional tabs and toolbar with a compact “island” could make browsing feel much cleaner. The lack of extension support is still a pretty big limitation for daily use, though.

> Design good...but really broken...some pages are simply blocked to prevent browser crash (e.g. chrome store...really important :D) without addons like 1password its really useless for most people in these days :)

> had me there before I found out there are no extensions, I use like 5 Firefox extensions daily, speaking of which, why not use a firefox base instead

> Floating controls sound lovely. No extensions would send me crawling back to Chrome by lunch.
