# New Quantum Sensors Could Transform Communications

## Summary

Rydberg-atom sensors developed through a collaboration between Canada's National Research Council and Quantum Valley Ideas Lab could improve radio-frequency measurement and communications. These quantum sensors use highly excited atoms to directly measure electric fields across wide frequency ranges with high precision, without requiring traditional metal antennas or external calibration. The technology has led to the most accurate spectroscopic measurements of caesium atom excited states and spawned a commercial spin-off company, WaveRyde, which is currently testing prototypes with early partners.
