# New Reading Streaks System (beta)

**[daily.dev World](https://daily.dev/sources/dailydevworld)** · [@kramer](https://daily.dev/kramer) · 3 min read · 314 upvotes · 80 comments

## Summary

Daily.dev has introduced a new Reading Streaks system to simplify the learning habit process. It tracks the user's current streak, longest streak, and total reading days. Unlike the previous Weekly Goal system, Reading Streaks allow users to continuously build on their accomplishments without the pressure of starting over each week. The system also includes a weekend freeze feature where the streak pauses over the weekend. Historical activities are retroactively counted towards the new streaks. Daily.dev plans to enhance the Reading Streaks system with features like leaderboards and badges based on user feedback.

## Content

We’re excited to share an update on how we’re evolving our gamification at daily.dev to better support your learning habits! We're rolling out a new Reading Streaks system, a simpler, more user-friendly way to keep up with your reading and learning goals.

## The Goal: To simplify your learning habit process

First off, the idea behind Reading Streaks is to foster an even more effective habit-forming process. We understand the importance of consistent learning and staying informed. The new reading streak system is designed to support that without the complexities of our previous Weekly Goal system.

## How does Reading Streaks work?

As part of the Reading Streaks system, we are tracking three key parameters to keep you motivated and informed about your progress:

* Current streak: The number of consecutive days you've read up to today
* Longest streak: The longest period of consecutive days you've managed to read since you started using daily.dev
* Total reading days: The cumulative number of days you've engaged with posts on the platform

## Weekly Goals vs. Reading Streaks

One major upgrade with Reading Streaks is that it’s straightforward and avoids the demotivation that came with the Weekly Goal system. Previously, not meeting your weekly goal could reset your progress, which often felt discouraging rather than motivating. Now, **Reading Streaks allow you to build on your accomplishments continuously without the pressure of starting over each week**.

Additionally, we’ve integrated a much-requested feature: the **weekend freeze**. We recognize that weekends are for personal time, and not everyone wants to spend them reading. With the new system, **your streak pauses over the weekend**. You can pick up right where you left off the following week, and if you choose to read over the weekend, it still counts!

## What about your historical activity?

To ensure a smooth transition, we're retroactively calculating your Reading Streaks. This means you won't start from scratch; your past reading activities have already been counted towards your new streaks.

If you feel there's a mistake with how we calculated your streaks please email our team at support@daily.dev

## What's the future of Reading Streaks?

We're launching Reading Streaks as a minimum viable product. It's basic for now, but **we plan to enhance it significantly with features like leaderboards, unique badges, and more customization options** as we gather your feedback and learn what works best.

Please remember that this is still a beta feature, so your insights and comments are incredibly valuable to us. Let us know what you think and how we can make Reading Streaks even better for our community.

*p.s. If you don't see it yet on your account, that's fine; we are doing a gradual rollout to make sure we get the experience right :)*

> I joined daily.dev in March 2022 and at the time I didn’t have any long-term habits and I didn’t know much about consistency. Later in 2022, I met Chris Bongers (@dailydevtips), and he became an example of consistency for me. I don't remember how long his streak was when we met, but eventually, he crossed the 1000 articles written in 1008 days mark ([link](https://daily-dev-tips.com/posts/i-wrote-1000-articles-whats-next/)). Since then, I learned a lot about consistency and developed my own set of habits and rituals.

> Instead of pausing the weekend days, I would actually prefer it if it just counted 5 days out of 7 instead. That way, if a day is missed during the week due to some long work day or event, you can still make it up during the weekend.

Since then, I learned a lot about consistency and developed my own set of habits and rituals.\nOf course, I wanted to hit one year reading articles on daily.dev every day, but there were several times when I accidentally missed a day, for example, due to a busy day at work.\nBut recently, I crossed two years of using daily.dev and in 2024 I also reached the year of reading articles daily milestone! 🥳 And almost immediately I lost the streak due to a busy day, when I completely forgot about daily.dev… 😭 But what I’ve learned about consistency in the last two years is that it’s not about not missing streaks, it’s about being able to recover quickly and keep going. That’s what I’m going to do and the introduction of the reading streak is just in time!\nI don’t remember the exact day when I joined daily.dev, so I took it as 365 + 366 + 24 = 755 days of using daily.dev and according to the new feature, I have 746 total reading days with the longest streak being 376 days! 🤯\nThank you, daily.dev, for making me a better engineer and a better person! 🙏","datePublished":"2024-04-24T18:34:45.178Z","url":"https://daily.dev/posts/tHG97fT8Y#c-f4mQYazjj","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Kirill Kurko","url":"https://daily.dev/kkurko","image":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/58859242?v=4"},"interactionStatistic":{"@type":"InteractionCounter","interactionType":{"@type":"LikeAction"},"userInteractionCount":11}},{"@type":"Comment","text":"Instead of pausing the weekend days, I would actually prefer it if it just counted 5 days out of 7 instead.
