# New Release: CrateDB 6.5

**[CrateDB](https://daily.dev/sources/cratedb)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

CrateDB 6.5 speeds up aggregations, GROUP BY queries, and query planning, and improves PostgreSQL compatibility. A count(DISTINCT col) rewrite made certain queries up to 21x faster in benchmarks, cutting one real query from 8,293 ms to about 397 ms. GROUP BY on string columns with doc values saw a performance increase of more than 100% in tests, and keys-only GROUP BY on high-cardinality text columns is 41% faster in one benchmark. The release also adds pg_is_in_recovery(), a date column type, OpenID Connect Discovery for JWT auth, and makes SWAP TABLE and RENAME TABLE safer during concurrent operations and snapshots.

## Questions this post answers

### How much faster is count(DISTINCT col) in CrateDB 6.5 compared to earlier versions?

Up to 21 times faster in benchmarks. CrateDB 6.5 rewrites a count(DISTINCT col) query without GROUP BY on a string column into an internal grouping operation. In a real example, a query against a 'cCode' column dropped from 8,293 ms average execution time to around 397 ms after the rewrite.

_Teams tuning dashboard query latency can track releases like this one on daily.dev._

### Does CrateDB 6.5 make GROUP BY queries on text columns faster?

Yes. Keys-only GROUP BY queries on text columns without a filter now use the Lucene term dictionary, cutting execution time by 41% for high-cardinality columns in benchmarks. GROUP BY queries on string columns with doc values enabled also saw a performance increase of more than 100% by reading values directly from doc values.

_Engineers optimizing dashboard filter and dropdown queries can follow database performance updates on daily.dev._

### Does CrateDB support OpenID Connect Discovery for JWT authentication?

Yes, as of CrateDB 6.5. CrateDB can automatically fetch the identity provider's configuration using OpenID Connect Discovery, reducing manual setup and maintenance for JWT authentication, including handling cases where signing keys get rotated.

_Developers configuring JWT auth for their database can track changes like this on daily.dev._
