In a controlled experiment of 961 workers, those who disclosed AI use were rated 10x lazier and 24 percentage points less likely to be recommended for high-visibility projects — even when the work output was identical. Framing AI use as team-focused (rather than personal efficiency) reduces the penalty somewhat, but both groups still rank below workers who say nothing. The key finding is that workplace culture is the real differentiator: in companies that actively celebrate AI use, the laziness stigma nearly disappears.
