# New Socket Shapes — Blender Developers Blog

## Summary

Blender 5.0 introduces a redesigned socket shape system for Geometry Nodes to support new features like volume grids and lists. The new system uses four main shapes: vertical bars for single values, diamonds for fields, circles for dynamic data types, and specialized shapes for grids/lists. Socket shapes now communicate what data a node expects or generates, independent of usage context. This change removes some previously available visual information but enables development of blocked features that couldn't progress with the old design.
