# New tool lets users repair AI-generated 3D models, then fabricate them just the way they want

**[MIT News](https://daily.dev/sources/mit)** · 6 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Researchers from MIT CSAIL, Google, and Northeastern University built InstructMesh, a generative AI tool that lets users generate 3D models from prompts, then edit and repair design flaws before fabrication. It combines Microsoft's TRELLIS 3D generation system with GPT-4 reasoning, letting users highlight and fix structural issues using natural language and sliders. In tests recreating flawed models from Thingiverse, novices identified and corrected nearly 90 percent of structural problems despite having no prior 3D modeling expertise. Example outputs include a dragon-themed mug, butterfly-wing glasses, a denim-look knee brace, and a shrimp-shaped robot. Future plans include AR integration and physics simulations to predict real-world durability.
