# Next.js moves to scheduled security releases

**[Socket](https://daily.dev/sources/socketdev)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Vercel is formalizing a monthly security release program for Next.js, replacing ad-hoc patches with a predictable cadence. The first scheduled release on July 20 will address 4 high and 5 medium severity vulnerabilities across Next.js 16.2 and 15.5. The change follows two major security incidents: a CVSS 9.1 middleware authorization bypass in March 2025 and the React2Shell (CVE-2025-55182) remote code execution flaw rated CVSS 10.0, which saw exploitation by state-nexus groups within hours of disclosure. Vercel also attributes rising patch volume industry-wide to LLM-assisted vulnerability discovery, citing Mozilla's 271-issue Firefox release and Microsoft's record 570-fix Patch Tuesday as examples. Self-hosted Next.js deployments remain most at risk during the window between scheduled disclosure and completed upgrades.
