Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has explained the Switch 2 price increase as necessary to maintain a healthy earnings structure, citing long-term cost pressures including AI-driven memory component price surges and rising oil prices from the US-Israeli war on Iran. The Switch 2 has sold nearly 20 million units, well above initial forecasts, but prices are being raised in key markets including Japan, Canada, Europe, and the US. Furukawa acknowledged the hike raises the barrier to entry for some consumers but said Nintendo will rely on compelling software releases to sustain hardware sales momentum. The company forecasts 16.5 million units sold in the current fiscal year.
