# Advice to a beginning software engineer

**[sean goedecke](https://daily.dev/sources/seangoedecke)** · 8 min read · 27 upvotes · 20 comments

## Summary

An opinion piece offering career advice to junior software engineers navigating the post-ZIRP era and the rise of AI agents. The author warns against politically risky ZIRP-era advice like unionizing or picking fights, urging beginners instead to stay conscientious, helpful, and apolitical. On AI, the advice is to neither avoid it nor blindly delegate judgment to it — use agents to inform understanding rather than replace it, and avoid becoming a 'meat proxy' who passes AI output on verbatim. The piece closes with reassurance that despite industry upheaval, being smart, friendly, and conscientious will remain valuable.

> Good advice. Use the agent, but keep your own judgment in the loop.

> I think "keep your head down" needs an exception for reporting a concrete bug. A junior should be able to bring a failing test to a senior without feeling like they're starting a fight.

> Sound advice overall. Things changed and courses are already adjusting. AI is a better programming teacher than most professors anyways. What it can't teach and will always stay relevant is not software engineering, but the artistic aspect of it. But who cares if all code will be written by some friggin' agent in Rust and assembly anyways.......

> Read a lot of code, not just write it. Reviewing others' pull requests teaches fast.
