Canonical's Livepatch now supports live kernel patching on ARM64 systems without requiring a reboot, available for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Ubuntu Core 26. Work began in 2023 with a gap analysis revealing missing upstream ARM64 support for reliable stacktraces and toolchain gaps in GCC, objdump, and Kpatch. By early 2025, patches were being applied in test environments. Livepatch is included in Ubuntu Pro but free for personal use on up to five machines, making it most valuable for server and cloud operators who need to avoid scheduled downtime for kernel vulnerability patching.
