# “No reason why everyone should have an identical Claude experience”: Anthropic’s mods let you change Claude Code’s look and behavior

## Summary

Anthropic has launched Claude Code mods, small JavaScript or TypeScript functions that hook into events inside Claude Code to rewrite prompts, block or alter tool calls, handle permissions, change the interface, or add new functionality. Unlike prior customization options (settings, CLAUDE.md, hooks, MCP servers, output styles), mods can reshape Claude Code's own features and UI. Mods are enabled by default starting in Claude Code 2.1.287, distributed as plugins (including via GitHub repos), and already power built-in features like AGENTS.md support and the /diff pane. Anthropic's Addy Osmani demonstrated an example mod, Token Weather, that visualizes context window usage. Because mod code runs locally with machine access, Anthropic warns developers to vet sources before installing, and Team/Enterprise environments load a sec-default guard that restricts mods from overriding permission-deny rules.

## Questions this post answers

### What are Claude Code mods and how do they differ from hooks or CLAUDE.md?

Mods are small JavaScript or TypeScript functions that hook into events inside Claude Code, letting developers rewrite prompts before they reach the model, block or rewrite tool calls, handle permission requests, replace parts of the interface, or add new functionality. Unlike settings, CLAUDE.md, hooks, or MCP servers, which shape instructions and permissions, mods can change Claude Code's own features and UI directly.

_Developers tailoring their coding assistant's behavior can follow mod examples and plugin releases on daily.dev._

### Which Claude Code version enables mods by default?

Mods are enabled by default starting in Claude Code version 2.1.287 and later. They were previously developed under the internal name 'function hooks,' first proposed publicly on GitHub on September 3, before being rebranded and shipped as Claude Mods roughly a month later. Anthropic already uses mods internally for features like AGENTS.md support and the /diff pane.

_Teams upgrading Claude Code can track version-specific feature rollouts like this on daily.dev._

### Are Claude Code mods safe to install from third-party sources?

Mod code executes locally with access through Claude Code to the developer's machine, so Anthropic recommends inspecting the source and only installing mods from trusted publishers. For Team and Enterprise users, a built-in sec-default guard loads ahead of user-installed mods and by default prevents them from overriding permission-deny rules, though this protection does not apply outside managed environments.

_Anyone weighing plugin security tradeoffs in AI coding tools can compare approaches like this on daily.dev._
