# Node.js 26 enters LTS as 'Lithium' with Temporal enabled and old APIs removed

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 13 upvotes · 1 comments

## Summary

Node.js 26 has entered Long Term Support under the codename Lithium, as version 26.13.0, with updates through the end of April 2029. Temporal, the new date and time API, is now enabled by default, replacing the old Date object with immutable, time-zone-aware types. V8 is bumped to 14.6 and Undici to 8.0. The `http.Server.prototype.writeHeader()` method and the `_stream_*` modules have been removed, and building from source now requires GCC 13.2 or newer. Linux binaries link against libatomic since Node.js 25. Node.js 26 is also the last release under the old odd/even LTS schedule, since every yearly major version becomes LTS starting with Node.js 27.

## Content

Node.js 26 is now in Long Term Support under the codename Lithium. The LTS release is 26.13.0, and it will get updates through the end of April 2029. It entered Active LTS on 28 October 2026.

The 26.13.0 release itself is almost a no-op. Compared with 26.12.1, the only changes are metadata, such as the `process.release` object now reporting LTS status. The real changes landed earlier in the 26.x line.

## What's new in the 26 line

- Temporal, the new date and time API, is enabled by default. It replaces the old `Date` with immutable, time-zone-aware types.
- V8 is at 14.6.
- Undici is at 8.0.

## What's removed or tightened

- `http.Server.prototype.writeHeader()` is gone.
- The `_stream_*` modules are gone.
- Building from source now requires GCC 13.2 or newer.

## Upgrading from 24, 22 or earlier

Since Node.js 25, the official Linux binaries link against libatomic. Depending on your distribution, you may need to install it separately before the binaries will run.

## The last odd/even release

Node.js 26 is the last release under the old odd/even LTS schedule. Starting with Node.js 27, every yearly major version becomes LTS, so the question of which release is safe for production goes away.

## Questions this post answers

### Is Node.js 26 an LTS release now, and how long will it be supported?

Yes, Node.js 26 entered Long Term Support under the codename Lithium as version 26.13.0. It entered Active LTS on 28 October 2026 and will receive updates through the end of April 2029.

### What happens to the Date object in Node.js 26?

The Temporal API is enabled by default in Node.js 26, replacing the old Date object with immutable, time-zone-aware types for date and time handling. This is one of the major additions in the 26.x release line alongside V8 14.6 and Undici 8.0.

_Developers migrating date handling code can follow Temporal API rollout news on daily.dev._

### What breaking changes should I check before upgrading to Node.js 26?

Node.js 26 removes `http.Server.prototype.writeHeader()` and the `_stream_*` modules entirely. Building from source now requires GCC 13.2 or newer, and since Node.js 25 the official Linux binaries link against libatomic, which may need separate installation depending on your distribution.

> the GCC 13.2 requirement is the sleeper issue here, if your native addon builds run on a debian bullseye or older ubuntu base image in CI you're going to hit a wall rebuilding from source and won't notice until that step just fails. worth pinning a newer builder image before you bump to 26 in prod.
