The Node.js project has launched a beta preview of its redesigned API documentation at beta.docs.nodejs.org. Built with a new standalone tool called doc-kit, the redesign introduces built-in search with keyboard shortcuts, a unified design system shared with the nodejs.org website, a persistent sidebar, per-page table of contents, mobile-friendly layout, and llms.txt support for AI tools. Content is still generated from the same Markdown source files, and all existing features like ESM/CJS switching, stability badges, and dark/light themes are preserved. The team is actively seeking community feedback via the nodejs/doc-kit GitHub repository.

The most encouraging detail is that the redesign keeps the same Markdown source and remains usable without JavaScript or offline; that reduces migration risk while improving navigation. Built-in search will only be as good as its symbol and overload ranking, so feedback on ambiguous queries like stream or read could be especially valuable before it replaces the current docs.

glad they split doc-kit out standalone, node’s docs build has been duct tape forever. curious if this finally kills the mdn-vs-nodejs-docs search confusion or if search engines just keep sending people to stale mirrors.
