# Not the End, but a Shift: How AI Is Pushing Computer Science Toward Deeper Engineering

## Summary

AI is automating routine, pattern-based coding work, and the author argues this could push computer science graduates toward deeper systems engineering. Stanford's Digital Economy Lab found that employment for workers aged 22 to 25 in the most AI-exposed jobs fell about 13% relative to other groups since generative AI took off, and young software developer employment dropped close to 20% from its late-2022 peak. The drop concentrates in automated tasks like boilerplate and CRUD endpoints, while roles where AI augments human judgment held steady. Only about 31% of the 2023-24 CS graduating cohort worked as software developers, down from 39% in 2019-20, showing that graduates are spreading into a wider range of roles.

## Questions this post answers

### How much has junior software developer employment dropped since AI tools became widespread?

Young software developer employment dropped close to 20% from its late-2022 peak, according to Stanford's Digital Economy Lab research on payroll data. More broadly, workers aged 22 to 25 in jobs most exposed to AI saw employment fall about 13% relative to other age groups since generative AI took off, driven mainly by fewer new hires rather than layoffs.

### What percentage of computer science graduates actually work as software developers now?

Only about 31% of the 2023-24 computer science graduating cohort worked as software developers, down from about 39% of the 2019-20 cohort, based on an analysis of US graduate data. This suggests a growing share of CS graduates are moving into adjacent roles such as system design, networking, security, or infrastructure rather than traditional developer jobs.

_Students weighing career paths in tech can follow shifts like this CS employment trend on daily.dev._

### What kinds of coding tasks is AI best at automating versus augmenting human work?

AI automates pattern-based, repetitive tasks like generating complete code, boilerplate, CRUD endpoints, wiring forms to APIs, and standard login pages, while it augments rather than replaces work requiring judgment, such as deciding how a system should be built, diagnosing failures, and anticipating what can go wrong. Stanford's Digital Economy Lab found youth employment held steady or grew in augmented roles but fell in automated ones.

_Engineers deciding where to focus skill-building amid AI coding tools can follow this distinction on daily.dev._

> Routine coding is pattern matching, yes. But I also believe it forces the young engineers to understand the project as a whole. This is what makes them stronger. Repetition is mastery. However, with AI taking all those parts now, it is harder for young ones to replicate what made the seniors of today "seniors". Your suggested methods is actually helpful, I've been applying most of those myself too even in my own personal projects. I act as if I am in a team even though I'm a solo dev on a project. But still, nothing beats the real world experience. I hope that the future would find a balance...
