After cycling through Notion, Obsidian, and Apple Notes, the author settled on a plain folder of Markdown files as their primary note-taking system. The core argument is that plain text files are app-agnostic, future-proof, and natively compatible with AI tools like Claude. Each major app has drawbacks: Apple Notes ties you to Apple's infrastructure, Notion becomes complex and costly, and Obsidian's sync is paywalled. A folder of Markdown files sidesteps all of these by keeping notes readable and editable in any app — or none. The author still uses Obsidian occasionally, but no longer treats it as the gatekeeper to their notes.

Why a folder of Markdown files is superior

Saying you ditch Obsidian to use plain Markdown instead (which is what Obsidian uses), to later say that you still use Obsidian (but you don’t have to use it as Obsidian has no vendor-lock) feels weird to me. Looks like the author just wanted to say that they ditch Obsidian in the title.
TLDR: use Obsidian or any other editor that uses plain Markdown and you are fine.

I just sync my Obsidian notes on meu git repo and I’m fine pulling from whenever I want. Easy, painless and better versioned than a plain folder on GDrive.

I always feel overwhelmed with all these text tools, but you’re right, Markdown is simpler and cheaper, and I’m addicted to Syncthing for sync all my texts across my devices.

Well… same same.

Obsidian is also having vault which is folder of md files. But the best part of Obsidian is the knowledge graph, which now a days also used by Graphify for coding strategies.
