The U.S. National Science Foundation has selected five new teams for its National Quantum Virtual Laboratory program, awarding $20 million total ($4 million per team over two years). The teams will develop experimental quantum technologies spanning computing, networking, and sensing. Projects include fault-tolerant quantum logic, a photonic entanglement network 100,000x faster than current quantum networks, protein-based quantum sensors for use inside cells, new error-detection methods using superconducting hardware, and portable chip-based quantum sensors. Industry partners include IonQ, NVIDIA, Quantinuum, Honeywell, and Boeing. NSF expects to select teams to transition from design to implementation phase later in 2026.
