# Nvidia's Vera CPU gains traction with European clouds and AI sandbox providers

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Nvidia's Arm-based Vera CPU, unveiled in March with 88 cores, is gaining adoption among cloud providers and AI sandbox companies. Anthropic, OpenAI and Perplexity are early adopters. European clouds Nebius, Nscale and Verda are using it alongside GPUs for data processing, while ClickHouse, Duck Labs and Polars report strong early results on analytical workloads. Modal plans to move its Sandboxes product onto Vera, its first step away from x86 chips. In Modal's own unverified benchmarks of 50 coding tasks, Vera matched or beat Intel, AMD and Amazon chips, pulling ahead by up to 2x when many containers ran on one server. Modal's Sandboxes brings in $300M a year.

## Content

NVIDIA's Vera CPU is starting to show up well beyond the GPU racks it was designed to sit beside. European cloud providers, database vendors and sandbox companies are all testing it, and the early numbers are strong.

## European infrastructure

Nebius, Nscale and Verda are using Vera to scale data processing alongside their GPUs. Aleria is focused on sovereign AI infrastructure. Bull, Dell, HPE, Lenovo and Supermicro are building Vera-based servers.

Data companies ClickHouse, Duck Labs and Polars report strong results in early testing on analytical and ETL workloads. They credit Vera's per-core performance, LPDDR5X memory bandwidth and NVIDIA Scalable Coherency Fabric. Sandbox providers Daytona, E2B, Modal and Vercel are building on Vera to run AI agent code execution at scale.

## ClickHouse on Vera

Vera now tops the ClickBench hardware leaderboard, and ClickHouse ran there as the standard, unmodified binary. The system has 176 cores and 352 hardware threads across two sockets, with up to 1.2 TB/s of memory bandwidth.

ClickHouse ran three micro-benchmarks: a filter, an aggregation and a join. In all three, performance scaled almost linearly up to the 176 physical cores, and the gains from hyperthreading tapered off after that. A regex filter query ran 228x faster at 352 threads. Turning off SIMD auto-vectorization made a simple filter query 3.5x slower, so the compiler is doing real work here.

## Modal's move off x86

Modal plans to move its AI agent sandbox product onto Vera. It would be the company's first step away from x86 chips from Intel and AMD, since Vera is Arm-based.

Modal ran its own benchmarks, which haven't been independently verified, on 50 coding tasks. Running one task at a time, Vera matched or beat Intel, AMD and Amazon chips. With a server packed with many containers, it pulled ahead by up to 2x, which Modal attributes to higher memory bandwidth.

That matters for background coding agents and reinforcement learning, where a CPU bottleneck can leave expensive GPUs sitting idle. Modal's Sandboxes product brings in $300M a year, and the company recently raised $750M at a $15.75B valuation.

NVIDIA unveiled Vera in March with 88 cores. Anthropic, OpenAI and Perplexity are already early adopters. Competition in sandboxes is heating up too: Baseten acquired Blaxel to compete in the space.

## Questions this post answers

### How many cores does Nvidia's Vera CPU have and is it x86 or Arm-based?

Nvidia's Vera CPU is Arm-based with 88 cores, unveiled in March. It targets AI agent infrastructure and data processing workloads as an alternative to x86 chips from Intel and AMD, and early adopters include Anthropic, OpenAI and Perplexity alongside European cloud providers like Nebius, Nscale and Verda.

### Why is Modal moving its Sandboxes product from x86 to Nvidia Vera?

Modal is moving its Sandboxes product to Vera because its own benchmarks of 50 coding tasks showed Vera matching or beating Intel, AMD and Amazon chips, with gains of up to 2x when many containers ran on one server, credited to higher memory bandwidth. These benchmarks haven't been independently verified. Sandboxes generates $300M a year for Modal.
