# NVK Vulkan Video Merged For Mesa 26.3

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Initial NVK Vulkan Video support has been merged into Mesa 26.3-devel, enabling H.264 decoding on the open-source NVIDIA driver stack. H.265 decode work exists but currently hangs the NVIDIA GSP, so it remains unusable for now. Because Vulkan Video depends on the GPU System Processor, only Turing and newer NVIDIA GPUs are supported. The feature also requires a Nouveau kernel patch merged for Linux 7.3. Mesa 26.3 debuts as stable in Q4, around the same time as Linux 7.3, after years of reverse-engineering and Rust driver infrastructure work.

## Questions this post answers

### Does the open-source NVK driver support Vulkan Video decoding on NVIDIA GPUs?

Yes, initial NVK Vulkan Video support with H.264 decoding merged into Mesa 26.3-devel. H.265 decode work exists but currently causes the NVIDIA GPU System Processor (GSP) to hang, so only H.264 is usable for now. Because Vulkan Video relies on the GSP, only Turing and newer NVIDIA GPUs are supported, and it also requires a Nouveau kernel patch merged for Linux 7.3.

### When does Mesa 26.3 become the stable release with NVK Vulkan Video?

Mesa 26.3, which includes the newly merged NVK Vulkan Video support, is due out as a stable release in November, roughly coinciding with the Linux 7.3 kernel release that provides the required Nouveau NVDEC patch.
