# Shopify is moving away from React Native to native Swift and Kotlin

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 3 min read · 3 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Shopify is dropping React Native for native Swift and Kotlin development, reversing the cross-platform strategy it publicly championed since 2020. The company argues that coding agents can now automatically port features between platforms, eliminating the main reason to use a cross-platform abstraction layer in the first place. Shopify rebuilt its Shop app from scratch in 12 weeks using an internal system called Helix, which breaks screens into checkpoints with automated tests, visual checks, adversarial reviews, and human sign-off. Results include faster Android startup, a 109MB smaller app, and 10x fewer session crashes. The larger Shopify app with 300+ screens is set to ship natively later this year. Shopify is also seeking new maintainers for its React Native open-source projects like FlashList. The move is framed as significant for large teams with AI tooling at scale, but the classic 'write once' cross-platform argument still holds for smaller teams without similar resources.

## What happened

Shopify is abandoning React Native in favor of native Swift and Kotlin development, reversing the cross-platform strategy it committed to in 2020. The company rebuilt its Shop app from scratch in 12 weeks using an internal AI-assisted workflow called Helix, and plans to ship the main Shopify app - over 300 screens - as fully native later this year. Shopify is also looking to hand off FlashList and other React Native open-source projects to new maintainers.

The results from the Shop app rebuild are concrete: faster Android startup, a 109MB smaller binary, and 10x fewer session crashes.

## Why they did it

The original case for React Native was simple: write once, avoid duplicating work across iOS and Android. That logic held when writing native code for both platforms was expensive. It holds less well now.

Shopify's stated reason is that coding agents have gotten good enough to port a feature from Swift to Kotlin (or vice versa) without much human effort. If the duplication cost is gone, so is the main argument for cross-platform frameworks. You're left with the downsides - abstraction layers, performance overhead, a larger binary - without the benefit.

## How Helix works

Helix is an internal tool that breaks large tasks into ordered checkpoints, each gated by four checks before a human ever looks at it:

1. **Behavior gate** - automated tests must pass
2. **UI gate** - design comparison using Gemini for spatial reasoning
3. **Adversarial code review** - two agents argue over code quality
4. **Human review** - final sign-off

Helix isn't public, but developers have already reverse-engineered the general approach: an orchestrator agent, sub-agents for specific tasks, a checkpoint planner, and a hook that forces agents to keep iterating until each gate passes. For the UI gate specifically, HTML prototypes can substitute for a reference app when none exists.

## What this means more broadly

A few things worth thinking through here:

**Native platforms matter more, not less.** When a lot of AI-generated code is mediocre and under-reviewed, the underlying platform's guardrails and performance characteristics become more important. Abstractions that hide platform behavior become liabilities.

**Cheaper code means more code, not less.** This is the Jevons paradox applied to software: when the cost of writing a feature drops, teams write more features and maintain more code, not less. The total complexity goes up.

**Deep expertise gets more valuable.** AI handles routine work well. The work that remains - architecture decisions, performance debugging, knowing why a platform behaves a certain way - requires the kind of knowledge that takes years to build. Generalist skills get commoditized; specialist knowledge doesn't.

## The obvious caveat

Shopify has a large, experienced mobile team. They can staff two native codebases and use AI agents to handle the duplication. Smaller teams probably can't, and shouldn't read this as a signal to abandon cross-platform frameworks. The economics that made React Native attractive for a five-person team haven't changed as dramatically as they have for a company with Shopify's resources.

The more interesting question is whether Helix-style workflows become accessible enough that the calculus shifts for smaller teams too. That's not a given yet.

## Questions this post answers

### Why is Shopify moving away from React Native to native Swift and Kotlin?

Shopify says coding agents can now automatically port features between iOS and Android, which removes the main reason for using a cross-platform framework like React Native: avoiding duplicate work. Since the duplication problem is solved by AI, the company no longer sees value in keeping the abstraction layer, so it rebuilt its Shop app natively using an internal system called Helix.

### What results did Shopify get from rebuilding the Shop app natively instead of using React Native?

Rebuilding the Shop app natively in Swift and Kotlin using an internal system called Helix took 12 weeks and delivered faster Android startup times, a 109MB smaller app size, and 10x fewer session crashes compared to the React Native version. The main Shopify app, with over 300 screens, is scheduled to ship as native later this year.

### What is happening to Shopify's React Native open-source projects like FlashList now that it's moving to native apps?

Shopify is looking for new maintainers to take over its React Native open-source projects, including FlashList, since the company is discontinuing its own React Native development in favor of native Swift and Kotlin apps.
