## Summary

GitHub's 2026 Octoverse report shows developers pushing code 17.9 billion times this year, more than 2024 and 2025 combined, with commits reaching 34.3 billion. More than 40% of pull requests now start with an AI agent's first draft, up from 17% in March. Among newly created repos, those with an agent configuration file logged 8 times as many commits as those without. Public open-source contributions hit 2.5 billion, over double last year's total. TypeScript remains the top language on GitHub by contributors, ahead of Python and JavaScript, and 61% of GitHub Copilot users who selected a model themselves now use more than one model.

## Questions this post answers

### What percentage of GitHub pull requests are started by an AI agent in 2026?

More than 40% of pull requests on GitHub started with an agent's first draft by September 2026, up sharply from 17% in March 2026. That amounts to about 110 million agent-started pull requests in September alone, roughly six times March's volume. Agent-started pull requests also more often touch multiple files, about 87% versus 79% for non-agent pull requests.

### Which programming language is most used on GitHub in 2026?

TypeScript is the most used language on GitHub by contributors, ahead of Python in second place and JavaScript in third. From September 2025 to September 2026, TypeScript added 3.62 million monthly contributors, Python added 3.23 million, and JavaScript added 1.82 million. Rust grew fastest by percentage, doubling over the past year among top languages.

### How many models do GitHub Copilot users switch between when coding?

61% of GitHub Copilot users who manually select a model used more than one model across their sessions in September 2026, up from 50% four months earlier. Developers on paid plans used 29 distinct models in May and 47 in September, with no single model carrying more than 25% of requests that month.

_Teams weighing which AI models to standardize on can follow usage patterns like these on daily.dev._

> The 40% agent-first-draft PR number gets the headlines, but the sharper signal is the 8x commit gap on new repos that ship an agent config file. Agents are expanding how much code moves, not just filling boilerplate. Review bandwidth is the real bottleneck now, not draft generation.
