OOMWOO is a fully open source robotic vacuum cleaner that runs entirely without cloud services. Built around a Raspberry Pi running ROS 2, it uses an inexpensive 2D lidar for room mapping and integrates with Home Assistant. Most structural parts require a 3D printer, but the software is largely complete and the project is actively developed on GitHub with many areas open for contribution. The project is positioned as a community-driven alternative to proprietary vacuums like Roomba amid growing concerns about subscription-based and cloud-dependent consumer hardware.

A robot vacuum that still works when the vendor’s cloud disappears is a big win. ROS 2 plus Home Assistant makes this feel useful beyond the demo too—local control is the way to go for home devices, imo.

Running ROS 2 SLAM on a Pi with a 2D lidar and no cloud round-trip is a genuinely clean build for a consumer vacuum, especially with everything staying local. I’ve seen ROS 2 on a Pi 4 get sluggish under mapping load, so I’m curious how the mapping loop latency holds up in a real multi-room run. The Home Assistant hook is what makes it actually useful for anyone already running local automation.
