# Open sourcing the Firebase SDKs

**[Firebase](https://daily.dev/sources/firebase-blog)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Firebase announced it is open sourcing several client SDKs, starting with parts of its iOS, JavaScript, Java, Node.js, and Python libraries, licensed under Apache 2.0. The iOS 4.0 SDK opens Realtime Database, Auth, Cloud Storage, and Cloud Messaging components, while the full product build isn't yet available since some components remain closed. The JavaScript 4.0 SDK opens Realtime Database, Cloud Storage, and Cloud Messaging, with Authentication and source maps coming soon. All three Admin SDKs (Java, Node.js, Python) are now fully open source. Firebase is also considering open sourcing its Android SDK and invites contributions via GitHub issues and pull requests.

## Questions this post answers

### Is the Firebase iOS SDK open source?

Yes, as of the Firebase iOS 4.0 SDK release, Realtime Database, Auth, Cloud Storage, and Cloud Messaging (FCM) components are open source on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license. However, some Firebase components remain closed, so the full product build process is not yet available, and CocoaPods distribution continues to use static frameworks.

_Track SDK licensing and build changes like this one on daily.dev before you upgrade a Firebase-backed app._

### Which Firebase JavaScript SDK components are open source?

The Firebase JavaScript 4.0 SDK open sources its Realtime Database, Cloud Storage, and Cloud Messaging (FCM) modules under Apache 2.0. Firebase Authentication was planned as a follow-up open source release, along with source maps for better debuggability of components using the SDK.

_Developers weighing Firebase's open source coverage can follow ecosystem updates like this on daily.dev._

### Are Firebase Admin SDKs open source?

Yes, all three Firebase Admin SDKs, for Java, Node.js, and Python, are fully open source, licensed under Apache 2.0. This includes the Python Admin SDK, which had recently launched at the time these SDKs were opened up for community contributions via GitHub.

_Anyone choosing an Admin SDK language for Firebase can check licensing details like these on daily.dev._
